toothless.

My liquid/semi-liquid diet following wisdom teeth extraction on Thursday was very sad the first day but has become surprisingly tolerable after stocking up on the tastiest baby food I could find at Meijer. Having an unusually strong preference for relatively bland and mushy food also helps…

Day 1: No water or food allowed before and 3 hrs after extraction = severe thirst and hunger. Miso soup mixed with egg was not very satisfying but the best I could do without going grocery shopping. Green tea sweetened with honey and cinnamon was surprisingly tasty and soothing. Chugged water all day, spilling and drooling all over because my mouth was still numb. Attractive.

Day 2: More miso soup + egg before parents take me to Meijer. Chug half a bottle of POM blueberry juice upon purchase and down a huge pot of thickened chicken stock + egg at home. Yummy. Lots of sugar free pudding and citrus jello follow. More tea with honey and cinnamon

No delicious homemade scallion buns for me :(

Day 3: Applesauce + cinnamon for breakfast, actually yum! More tea, more water, more pudding and jello. After 2 days on the couch, forced to take a walk downtown. Ice cream somehow not appealing at all so I sit miserably while my parents enjoy vanilla and cannoli flavored cups…and mosquitoes feed on my flesh. “Good,” says my mother, “this means she’ll lose weight!”

Day 4: Wake up to savory mashed potatoes made by mom om nom nom. So what if they’re a bit chunky? So what if I’m eating mashed potatoes for breakfast at 10am? Try to control myself but quickly gobble up a whole bowl. Chicken soup + pudding for lunch. Sneak a few more bites of potato. Chicken soup + lots of applesauce + cinnamon for dinner. Pudding cup later.

Day 5: Applesauce + cinnamon with a touch of honey for breakfast again, chicken soup + leftover mashed potatoes for lunch. Jello snack midday. Ready for something new for dinner - whipped up a weird but palatable concoction of tomato soup, finely chopped mushrooms, egg, and a dash of hot sauce. Really, it was good!

Day 6: Thickened broth from stewed beef and carrots for lunch, new and yummy. Sutures removed in the afternoon but still sore and afraid to eat solid food. Tomato soup and cinnamon roll pudding (artificial tasting, blegh) for dinner. Got very hungry later and devoured a huge tub of cottage cheese, bland but filling.

Day 7: Chilled garden gazpacho at the Chicago Botanic Garden - refreshing with a kick but a little too chilly for my liking. Forgot to refrigerate my applesauce so it went rancid :( My last jello snack (orange!) was unusually tasty, especially after an unfortunately large bite of the bad applesauce…

Day 8: Back to normal-ish food! Still prefer softer stuff and soup, but I can chew now wooo!  Thought I was in the clear but foolishly ate a granola bar too exuberantly and got bits and pieces lodged in my gaps/holes ewwwwww. Tried to rinse/flush out but pretty sure there’s still runaway granola hiding out in them SO GROSS and mildly uncomfortable…hope they don’t get infected, will go to the dentist in a couple of days to make sure everything is ok. WHY DIDn’t they give me a syringe/cleaning instructions in the first place??!!! Grr. So back to only semi-liquids because I’m paranoid now about eating anything else :(

Day 9: Spontaneous picnic lunch in the Christian Science Plaza with mashed potatoes and greek yogurt for me, yummy. Took a risk and went to Hot Pot Buffet for dinner - a surprisingly great choice! I was able to gobble up a lot of soft and tender veggies and meat without chewing much while still getting the full taste of savory goodness :D And as usual, the spicy and house broths were amazing, easy to swallow and soothing to my mouth.
